ICACS 23 - South Africa
ICACS (the International Conference on Atomic Collisions in Solids) is a biannual meeting, which deals with physical and chemical phenomena induced by the interaction of low and high energy beams (hyperthermal up to relativistic velocities) of charged or dressed particles (singly up to highly charged ions, atoms and clusters, but also photons, electrons, and antiprotons etc.) with the surface and the bulk of solids and also liquids. The program consists of invited talks, oral and poster presentations.
The 23rd ICACS meeting is being organized jointly by the Department of Physics of the University of Pretoria and the University of the Witwatersrand.
The meeting will be held at the Hans Merensky Wildlife Estate located near Phalaborwa
in the Limpopo province of South Africa. The estate is adjacent to the world renowned Kruger National Park, and has it own
wildlife park. This facility will make this ICACS conference a unique experience.
The traditional tutorial session/school programme will be presented on the first day of the conference Sunday, 17 August 2008. The
normal conference programme will commence on Monday, 18 August 2008.
While the emphasis of the conference is on fundamental processes (experiment, theory and computer simulation), challenging scientific and technological applications in physics, chemistry, biology and medicine are considered as well as new developments in experimental techniques. Pertinent materials are pristine or adsorbate covered metals, semiconductors and insulators. Particle interactions with gas targets, liquids and complex materials such as polymers and biomaterials and the related physical phenomena are also applicable topics for the conference. Macro to nano-structures formed due to particle interaction is an important subject to be considered. The main scientific topics include:
1. Scattering, stopping and related processes
2. Materials processes in the bulk
3. Surface processes
4. Emission phenomena
5. Applications of ion beams
